What is beard oil?
Beard oil is a blend of organic cold pressed carrier oils and 100% pure essential oils. At least it should be. However, each of our Yukons Beard, beard oils and beard balms are full of great benefits for your facial hair and skin. These oils have been perfectly combined to create an amazing leave-in conditioner for your beard. This results in a healthy, vibrant beard. Please see individual product pages for a listing of full ingredients for each product. We don't hide anything, no "proprietary blends". Also see question below "Is beard oil all natural?"
Why beard oil?
Yukons Beard oils and balms rejuvenates dry, itchy, scraggly beards and makes them SHINE. Beard oil hydrates and conditions as it soaks into your hair and skin. It soothes dry skin, prevents beard-druff (dandruff of the beard), softens the hair, and even encourages beard and mustache growth.
The truth about beard oil. If I apply beard oil will it grow?
Beard oil will provide nutrients and minerals to your skin and hair follicles. But it's not a magic potion like some beard oil companies want you to think. I want to repeat it's not a magic formula that will grow you a full beard in a week or a month's time. Some men can grow a full beard in 2 weeks, not many can though. So don't be discouraged. Beard oil supports growth, but it is not the main cause for growth. It really comes down to genetics. However, with that said, it took my beard 8 months to finally fill in. I had splotchy patches that took many months for them to finally fill in. The beard oil helped, especially to keep my skin from itching and keep my beard soft. There's many variables that can affect hair growth. I also try to eat clean with plenty of fruits and vegetables and limit processed foods. So if I can provide any encouragement here it would be to give it plenty of time, at least 8 months and no matter how you feel your beard looks, don't give in to shaving! See where you're out 8-10 months from now with no shaving. I hope this helps you out!
Why is my beard so dry and brittle?
This is pretty common. The number one reason why a beard becomes dry and brittle is due to dehydration. You may not think you're dehydrated but your body is telling you different. You should be drinking plenty of water every day. Hot humid summers and activities that cause you to sweat, dry heat, and dry chilly wind, all suck moisture out of your body. You have to be re-hydrating yourself to keep your skin moisture levels satiated. Beard oil will relieve the symptoms of dry, itchy, irritable skin & beard, but the root cause is a lack of hydration. Bottoms up to that water glass!
Beard oil vs beard balm?
Great question. Beard oil and beard balms are the same when it comes to nutrients, getting rid of beard-itch & dandruff, softening your beard, making your beard smooth, and giving your face a great smell & shine. The one main difference with beard balm is that it has more holding power to tame wild hairs and the balm is excellent for shaping your beard or mustache. Our beard balm doesn't have a burnt smell to it because we exclude the use of beeswax and instead we have chosen to use soy wax, which has a better consistency in our opinion (as well as being vegan). Beard balms can range in how strong of a hold they maintain. Our beard balm has a light-holding power. We didn't want it to be too hard to get out of the tin, nor did we want it to be too difficult to melt in your hands while you rub them together. Some beard balms create a crumbly texture when you rub it in your palms and I don't like getting crumbles in my beard. So we have experimented and carefully crafted a beard balm that melts thoroughly in your hands when you rub them together and the balm thickens back up once you apply it in your hair creating a light "hairspray like" effect. It's really amazing.
How do you apply beard balm?
When is the best time to use beard balm vs beard oil?
I personally go through phases of when I use beard balm. Most of the time I'm in a rush to get out the door and applying beard oil is quicker :) I really enjoy balm though. I will use beard balm if I want to give my beard a little extra stiffness and length in look. It's really good for shaping. I tend not to use balm at night just before bed, but occasionally I do. Before bed I will typically just apply beard oil. It really comes down to preference and what you personally like putting in your beard. Beard balm, because of it being thicker/denser, has better control over hair and is popular in high humidity months May-Sept (depending where you live though).

Who should use beard oil?
Any man with facial hair, no matter what type of hair. Facial hair comes in all sorts of shapes, styles, hair thickness, colors, etc., and all men have experienced common hair problems at one time or another such as bristly hair, dry & itchy skin, dandruff (beard-druff), split-ends, wild stray hairs and funky smells. You're not alone! Beard oils and beard balms fix these issues.
When should I start using beard oil?
You can start using beard oil when your beard has just begun. Many people don't realize this. They think that you need to wait until your beard reaches a certain length to enjoy the benefits. Applying beard oil at the beginning of the growing process, even if you only have a 5 o'clock shadow you'll begin to notice the softening effect of beard oil and beard balm. It's really quite pleasant and it really does soften those sharp bristles. Some men feel the softening effect of beard oil after the first use, but if you don't, give it a few days using it 2-3 times daily, and you'll be amazed. I have some friends that will even use it as an aftershave because it makes their skin smoother. Typical aftershave dries the skin out due to the alcohol based ingredients. Beard oil does not contain alcohol or any harsh ingredients and is an excellent moisturizer.
How do I use beard oil?
How to apply beard oil. Place 4-6 drops of our delightful beard oil (about a dime sized amount) into the palm of your hand. Rub hands together and invigorate your beard! Depending on how big your beard is you may need to use more beard oil to ensure your beard gets enough. Note that if your hands are really oily after putting on beard oil, you may have used a little too much. I personally use about a half dropper full and I massage into my beard. If my hands are a little oily I will rub it on my arms and into my skin elsewhere. It works as a great skin moisturizer as well. Apply as often as you'd like and really as much as you'd like!
I don't have a big beard so I don't know if beard oil can help me?
That's another common question I get often. Beard oil is perfect for those who have beard stubble and smaller beards. Beard stubble can be quite bristly and rough. That's where beard oil comes in handy.
Here's 3 benefits:
1. Beard oil will soften that stubble up and make it feel smoother.
2. Beard oil will make your face smell great.
3. Beard oil will keep your skin from drying out without it feeling greasy.

Does it matter if you use beard oil when your beard is wet or dry?
Yukons Beard oils and beard balms can be applied to damp or dry beards. After a shower is probably the best time to apply beard oil because your pores are open from the hot water... unless you take cold showers :) My beard is slightly damp when I put it on after I get out of the shower. I dry it with a towel and so my beard is still slightly damp.
How often can I use beard oil?
As often as you'd like :) I typically apply beard oil 3-4 times a day - morning, afternoon, evening, and bedtime. Or as a hobbit would apply it to his feet . . .breakfast . . .second breakfast . . .third breakfast (
elevenses) . . . and so on.
How often should I use beard oil?
That's a great question. To really enjoy the benefits of beard oil you should use it at least 2 times a day (morning and evening) for a minimum of 3 weeks, to get the most out of your beard oil. I just want you to have a great experience and really feel the power of beard oil. Commit to this time frame and then you can back off and use beard oil less often if you prefer. Also, note that beard oil isn't just for full big beards, but it's really good for beard stubble and smaller beards. I hear often from people who say, I'll use beard oil when my beard gets a little longer, as if they can't benefit from it because their beard is too small. That's simply not the case. Beard oil really does a beard good, any size, even if it's stubble.
How long will a bottle of beard oil last?
The shelf life of an unopened bottle of beard oil is around 12 months and the scent may start to fade a little. A little separation may occur. If that's the case simply shake the bottle to mix the oils back up. After opening a bottle of beard oil it's recommended to use it within 3 months as evaporation will lessen the scent. Do keep the closure lid on the bottle when not using the beard oil to help the scent last longer. There are over 100 applications of beard oil in every bottle. If you apply your beard oil like a boss (aka 3 times a day), a bottle will last you about a month.
How long will the beard oil scent last?
Yukons Beard Oil is scented with 100% pure essential oils. They smell amazing! Depending on how quickly your hair and skin absorb the oil, it's possible to still smell the beard oil 3-4 hours after applying it.
Is beard oil all natural?
Yes, Yukons Beard Oil is all natural, except for our Old Hippie beard oil. The Frangipani in our Old Hippie blend is both natural and synthesized due to cost. Our beard oil is sourced from only the finest ingredients. We use a combination of organic cold pressed carrier oils, jojoba, castor, hazelnut, and sweet almond. Our grapeseed oil is not organic, however it is still cold press and of very high quality and certified to be pesticide free. Our essential oils are 100% pure. Our Frangipani essential oil is a frangrance oil. No parabans. Petroleum-free, Paraben-free, DBP and DEHP-free, No animal testing, Vegan.
Can you make nut free beard oil?
Yes, we can make any of our beard oils nut free. You can have the same scented beard oils but without the nut based carrier oils. I have many friends who are allergic to nut oils and who can't use the hazelnut or almond oils that we use as the base for our beard oils. That's no problem, we can exclude the nut based oils and use only Jojoba for the base carrier oil. If this is something you are interested in or you know a friend who could use some beard oil that is nut free we can certainly help. At checkout there will be a box to leave a note, so just leave us a message saying that you would like the beard oil to be made nut free and we will be glad to do so. The label on the beard oil will list out the full ingredients (because we currently don't have any "nut free" labels yet) but we will include a note in the package stating that the beard oil is made nut free with Jojoba oil as the only carrier oil. You can choose any of our beard oils and we can make them nut free. We will be extra cautious when making them, but do know it is made in an area that uses nut oils. Remnants of the nut oils are possible in the nut free beard oils, so please test a small amount before applying a lot. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us.
How do I make my beard and mustache grow faster and thicker?
Your beard is a living, breathing, organism and requires a healthy environment to grow to its fullest. If you throw seeds into dry, dusty, nutrient-barren soil ... and on top of that you don't water them ... they're not going to grow that well, if at all. Yukons Beard oils and beard balms are full of vital nutrients and minerals that will help your beard and mustache to grow faster, thicker, and healthier. Our beard oil and balm includes vitamin A, vitamin B's, vitamin E, silicon, chromium, copper, zinc, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and flavonoids ... just to name a few. A healthy diet (rich in fruits and vegetables) and optimum water intake will also increase the overall health of how your beard and mustache grow. *Disclaimer, beard oil is not a magical potion that will miraculously grow you a behemoth beard overnight. Growing hair takes time and patience. My beard was splotchy all the way up until the 8th month and then it started to fill in nicely. I almost gave up if it wasn't for those encouraging comments I'd get every now and then. Stick with it . . .Don't shave it!
Should I shave or trim regularly to help my beard grow thicker?
In my experience what worked for me was just giving my beard the time it needed to fill in. I stopped shaving all together, I didn't even trim my beard, still don't :) I will cut a stray hair from time to time, but other than that I do not cut it. I would give your beard at least 8 months of growth time before you trim or shave. The problem with continual shaving or trimming is that the patchy spots do not have time to fill in. As your beard hairs grow longer they will naturally fill in the patchy spots and allow more time for the splotchy patches to fill in underneath the longer beard hairs that have grown faster. I hope this helps you get past this tough, discouraging stage of beard growth. Push through the temptation to shave and in 8 months time you should see some great progress.
How do I make my mustache look separated from my beard?
Let it grow, let it grow! You can’t trim your beard and mustache, especially around the areas of separation, if you want it to look separate. This will take time to accomplish. As your beard and mustache start to grow out, you’ll want to begin pulling and twisting your mustache out and away from your beard. Pull and twist your mustache often. Be patient, enjoy the beard oil, and you’ll get there! I've heard some people say that the can't stand how their mustache starts to get into their mouth and therefore they will cut it back. I admit this is part of the growing pains but those short mustache hairs will grow out longer in time and won't be as irritating. The key is to correct the position of your mustache hairs away from your mouth. Oils, balms, and your fingers will help to correct the positioning, but you'll just need to keep moving the hairs out of the way. Combing works good too.
How do I eat and drink with a beard and mustache?
Very carefully or you’ll be collecting food for the birds :) This will take some practice to get used to. The longer and thicker your beard, the more places food will be able to hide. I find eating big burritos the most challenging. Burritos are best eaten if you blend them up and drink them as a smoothie :) That was a joke. I’ll pull my mustache out of the way and then take a bite in such a way as to not eat my hair. Use a napkin as much as needed and definitely take a look in the mirror when you’re done. You don’t want people to see your lunch hanging out in your beard.
My wife doesn't want me to have a beard, what can I do?
First, ask yourself why doesn't your wife want you to have a beard? Here are 2 reasons:
1. Your beard stinks when it grows out. Even after washing it, it still stinks.
2. Your wife wants to kiss your smooth face. But the underlying reason she wants to kiss your smooth face is because your beard would scratch her.
Become a HERO and make your wife happy. Happy wife, Happy life. Yukons Beard oils get rid of the stink and scratch.

How do I store my beard oil?
The best way to store beard oil is room temperature and out of the sun. Keeping your beard oil in direct sunlight will cause the beard oil to break down quicker and shorten its shelf life. It’s also recommended to keep the beard oil bottle standing up right instead of lying down. Doing so will prevent any potential leaks if the cap is not screwed on tight.
My beard balm melted, what do I do?
Yes, beard balm melts when left in the heat such as pants pockets, your vehicle, direct sunlight, your mailbox for an extended period of time, etc. If your beard balm happens to melt here is how to re-solidify it:
1. Take the top of the can off.
2. Use a hair dryer to melt the beard balm.
3. Stir thoroughly with a toothpick making sure the soy wax and the oils are mixed together.
4. Put in refrigerator or a cool place for a few hours.
5. Enjoy your beard balm again :)

Why is the beard oil dropper cap sticky and not sucking up the oil right?
Over time as you use the beard oil dropper, oils will get on the dropper cap and cause it to be sticky and crusty looking. This is normal and the dropper cap can be cleaned with soap and hot water. The dropper cap actually comes apart, you just pull the glass dropper away from the rubber cap for easy cleaning. Let it dry and then push the glass dropper back up into the rubber cap. Depending on the position of the glass dropper in the rubber cap, it will affect the pulling or sucking power of the dropper. Simply adjust the glass dropper inside the rubber cap to create a good pull.
Are beards really as dirty as toilets?
I'm sure you've seen the articles popping up on the Internet saying that beards are as dirty as toilets. I'm sure some beards have fecal matter in them, probably just as many people have fecal matter on their faces or in the hair on their head. Steps to minimize this atrocity:
- Wash your hands after using the restroom.
- Wash your beard just like you would wash your hair.
- Apply beard oil because it is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. Beard oil helps keep your beard healthy. A healthy beard is an oiled beard.
Does your beard get hot during the summer?
Not really. It may look hot in more than one way :) but it doesn't cause me to get overheated. Heat for the most part tries escaping through the top of your head and not your face. I have long hair and I notice that is what causes the most heat. My face stays at a pretty comfortable temperature because my beard follicles tend to pull heat away from my face. And on the flip-side in colder months, my beard does a good job of cutting the wind chill down. It acts as a wind breaker.
Dry beard? Flaky Beard? How to stop flaky beard?
Flaky beard or flaky skin happens. You're not alone on this. It's a common beard issue. Some men struggle with this more than others but everyone has experienced dry flaky skin at some point. Skin and hair react differently to temperature and humidity changes as well as how hydrated your body is. How to stop flaky beard? Using beard oils and beard balms. Using beard oil on a regular basis will treat this issue. Use enough beard oil to cover and moisturize the area and rub it in. Your skin will soak up the oil after a while. Then repeat the process. Keeping your skin and hair moisturized consistently will keep that dry flaky beard away!
Can I use beard oil under the sun?
Yes, you can use beard oil under the sun without worry of getting a sun burn due to the beard oil. Yukons Beard oil is safe to use out in the sun. The beard oil actually has some SPF protection. The SPF in our beard oils are in the range of 4-10 SPF. This SPF is naturally occurring in our oils. So if you get sunburned it's not a result of using beard oil. It would be from prolonged exposure to the sun's powerful rays.
Can I use beard oil on my mustache?
Yes, using beard oil on your mustache is perfectly fine. The same great benefits for the beard apply to the mustache. Beard oil is great to soften and smooth a mustache. Beard oil keeps the dry skin underneath your mustache away. It also makes your mustache smell great!
